Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has approved
the voluntary fortification of breakfast cereals with vitamin D, following the
amendment of Food Standards Code. Given that nearly 1/3 of Australian adults
and almost half of New Zealand adults and children are deficient in vitamin D,
GLNC welcomes the amendment and supports FSANZ’s assessment that the
fortification of breakfast cereals with vitamin D is safe and has the potential
to reduce vitamin D deficiency and reduce the risk of health problems
associated with low vitamin D status, including increased risk of
musculoskeletal conditions, osteopenia, osteoporosis and fractures in adults
and rickets in children. As a result of
the changes to the Food Standards Code, breakfast cereal manufacturers are now
permitted to make a maximum claim equivalent up to 25% of the regulatory
Recommended Dietary Intake (rRDI) for Vitamin D. For further information, click
